Photographer: Keith Burkey
Location: Punxsutawney, PA
Date: December 31, 2005
Description: Accompanied by several friends, Keith found himself in Buffalo & Pittsburgh's Riker Yard on a very dismal morning of New Years Eve, 2005. The northbound road train, behind a now-dizzying combination of B&P SD45Rs 460, 454, 457, Rochester & Southern GP40 102, and B&P GP38-2 2003, sat tied down on the main. Yard power, and an SD80MAC-powered Norfolk Southern 562, coal loads for the Keystone Power Plant at Shelocta, sat on adjacent tracks. Keith remembers thinking this was neat to see, but the lineup was hardly unusual for the time. It should come as no surprise, but so much has changed in the years since this photo: the quality of digital cameras, NS now uses its own routing to Shelocta instead of relying on trackage rights between from Freeport to Creekside, The GP38s are still in service, but every other locomotive present that day has been retired or rebuilt.

Description: What was once Pennsylvania Railroad's South Fork Secondary and later Conrail's Windber Industrial Track, is just now a long industrial spur owned by Rosebud Mining Company. Providing access to their Mine 78 Prep Plant, the several mile spur snakes through Windber, reminiscent of many now-long-gone branch lines in western Pennsylvania. Late in the afternoon of January 20th, as a storm began dropping several inches of ice and snow in the region, Norfolk Southern local C47 moves through Windber on its way north to South Fork. Five SD80MACs - three up front and two on the rear - provide the power to move 100 loads of coal.
